Venus Training & Consultancy

Project Overview

Venus Training & Consultancy are based in Plymouth and specialise in the delivery of high quality training and consultancy in the Health & Social Care sector.

I was approached by Venus Training & Consultancy and asked to update their existing web site. A solution was needed that allowed the team to update their own web site content. After discussing the various options available we agreed WordPress offered the flexibility needed, being both easy to use and extremely well supported.

There are a number of plugins used on the site, installed to both enhance user experience and enable the Venus team to easily manage content. Plugins include SlideDeck for WordPress, MailChimp for WordPress and WP e-commerce.

Client Testimonial

We made the decision to overhaul our old website and spent some time looking for a good website designer. It is safe to say that we definitely found that in Paul from Retro Edge. Right from the start Paul was professional, knowledgeable and very approachable. He took the time to explain everything to us in terms that we understood. He helped us to choose the best type of site and most importantly he has a fantastic eye for design.

We are incredibly pleased with our new look website and the support we have received, it is exceptional value. We would not hesitate to recommend Retro Edge. Paul has created exactly the website we wanted and the process was very smooth!

J&S Photography

Through their web site J&S Photography, Jane and Stephen offer an expert wedding photography service throughout Plymouth and its surrounding areas. Steve, having recently discovered the delights of WordPress when designing his portfolio site at Prior Creative, decided converting the current html site into WordPress would make updating the site much easier. The original J&S Photography web site had been online for some time without much new content being added, the shift to WordPress will allow Jane and Steve to incorporate a news page and upload and remove photos with ease.

Client Testimonial

After meeting Paul (Retro Edge Web Design) I found him to be extremely helpful and reassuring in his approach without the techy speak that I have experienced in the past with other web designers. Paul was always willing to help with all issues regarding my brief to him. I would recommend Retro Edge Web Design to anyone who needs a unique, professional and high quality web-design service.

Future Kayaks

The Future Kayaks web site is now online. The client is currently in the process of setting up the business, including designing and building a number of new kayaks. Whilst this time consuming process is taking place the move was taken to get the site online so potential customers could at least see some content when visiting the site. Over the next few months content will be loaded as it becomes available. The site design is almost finished with some coding still to be completed.

Relaunched Cutting Edge Hair Design

Cutting Edge Hair Design

I have spent the last few days revamping one of the existing sites on my portfolio, Kimberley Burroughs portfolio site; Cutting Edge Hair Design.

Although the old site suited a purpose it became obvious that as Kim’s portfolio was growing and growing she needed a site that allowed her to upload new photos with ease. As I have been using WordPress a lot lately this seemed a good option as Kim could update all her own content; this includes a new blog section and gallery feature where new photos and galleries can be added from a main admin console.

As is standard with any WordPress install users can log in and make comments on the sites posts and galleries. Although the site is not 100% complete, the bulk of the work is done so why not check it out and leave some feedback.

Cutting Edge Hair Design can be found at cuttingedgehairdesign.co.uk. You can also Become A Fan of Cutting Edge Hair Design on the offical Facebook page, Cutting Edge Hair Design.

Too many web sites… not enough time

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

The new year has been crazy busy so far. I’m not sure whether it’s because we’re “coming out of a recession” or just because it’s the new year but I have had an unprecedented amount of inquiries. I’m currently working on a new Zen Cart installation for a rosette printing company, a WordPress site for Hitched Entertainment, adding the finishing touches to tennisMAD along with several posters and flyers as well as redesigning existing web sites NPA UK and NPA Spain into WordPress sites. If the start of the year is anything to go by, it’s certainly going to be a busy one.

New site launch: tennisMAD

Tennis MAD

Over the festive period I have been working hard on a new tennis web site for an existing client. The old site, KGS Tennis is sadly no more and having worked on it for a couple of years now, including developing and designing the original web site and designing numerous posters and flyers for the KGS team, I have to say I am sad to see it go. That said, I have learnt a lot developing the KGS Tennis site which has helped shape the development of this new site.

tennisMAD is the first full site I’ve designed using WordPress. WordPress has allowed me to design a site that can be fully updated by the tennisMAD team, giving them more control over the content that is published on the site and allowing me more time to work on the sites design rather than administration. As well as giving the tennisMAD team more control over there own site WordPress offers a range of additional plug ins that add more user interaction including the ability to post comments on articles, interactive photo galleries, RSS feeds and much much more.

The site has officially been launched today.

Having recently designed my own WordPress site I have been very impressed with what can be acheived and how easy it is to implement. The following page showcases some of the awesome web sites designed using WordPress. Hopefully they will inspire you as they have inspired me.

WordPress

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Although I have been designing web sites for some time now I have tended to avoid using content management systems due to a lack of coding knowledge. Having used Joomla! in the past and not really liking it very much I have been looking for a more user friendly alternative; something I could use for future clients web sites that would allow them to update their own site with relative ease.

I have been aware of WordPress for some time but never really looked at it until recently. I decided to give WordPress a go with the aim of recoding the standard template to look exactly like my current web site. With the exception of a few minor differences including the “proudly powered by WordPress” statement in the footer and the “register” and “log in” links at the top of the side bar I have been successful in recreating the exact look of the main Retro Edge Web Design site.

Wordpress | Blog tool and publishing platform

The WordPress installation you see here is a recoded version of the default installation (see image to the right). To get the WordPress default installation looking exactly like my main site I had to recode a number of files including header.php, footer.php, sidebar.php etc. etc. Due to the menu structure of the main site I stripped out most of the WordPress sidebar menus and widgets; which I can see would be useful for future projects but were not relevant for my current requirements. As well as wanting to test out the various features of WordPress I wanted to add a comments feature to my site so users could comment on blogs and articles.

If you are interested in using WordPress on your own site then check out the wordpress.org web site, the support forum is superb. Alternatively if you would like to enquire about having your web site designed using WordPress please contact me via the contact page.
